Anyone travelling overseas and particularly people visiting family abroad, travelling to remote areas or staying for an extended period.
What it costs
The consultation is bulk billed. Travel vaccines themselves are generally not covered by Medicare and are paid for separately – your GP will tell you the cost first.

What to expect

Book six to eight weeks ahead
Some courses need multiple doses spaced apart. Earlier is better, but come in even if your trip is soon.

Bring your itinerary
Countries, dates and whether you are in cities or rural areas — it all changes the advice.

Your consultation
Your GP reviews your history and vaccination record and recommends what is appropriate.

Before you fly
You leave with what you need and clear instructions for while you are away.

Common questions
The consultation is bulk billed for patients with a valid Medicare card. Travel vaccines themselves are generally not covered by Medicare and are paid for separately — your GP will tell you the cost before anything is given.
Six to eight weeks is ideal. If you are travelling sooner, book anyway — there is usually still something worth doing.
Bring your medication list. Your GP can advise on carrying medication, time zones and what to do if you run out.
Only for certain destinations and it must be given at an approved centre. Your GP will tell you if it applies and where to go.
