Skin Checks at Flourish

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world and most skin cancers can be treated successfully when they are found early. A skin check is a straightforward way to keep an eye on your skin — especially if you have noticed a spot that is new or changing.

  • Full skin examination from head to toe
  • Checks of a single spot or mole you are worried about
  • Biopsy of suspicious spots
  • Removal of skin cancers and other lesions at the practice
  • Referral to a dermatologist or plastic surgeon where needed
  • Advice on sun protection and checking your own skin

Who it is for and what it costs

Who it is for

Anyone with a spot that is new, changing or unusual. Regular checks matter most for people with fair skin or lots of moles, people who have had skin cancer before and people with a family history of melanoma. Ask your GP how often you should be checked.

What happens

What to expect

01

Book a long appointment

A full skin check takes time. Ask for a long appointment and mention that it is for a skin check.

02

Come prepared

Skip make-up and nail polish if you can. Make a note of any spots you are worried about so none get missed.

03

The examination

Your GP will check your skin, including areas you cannot easily see yourself. You can keep your underwear on and ask for a chaperone.

04

Next steps

If a spot needs a closer look, your GP may take a biopsy or arrange removal. Results are discussed with you at a follow-up appointment.

Common questions

Common questions

It depends on your risk. Your GP will recommend an interval for you. In between, check your own skin regularly and book sooner if you notice anything new or changing.

A new spot or one that is changing in size, shape or colour. Also look for a spot that looks different from the others and any sore that does not heal.

Many can be removed at the practice in a single appointment. Some are better treated by a dermatologist or plastic surgeon and your GP will refer you if so.
